About the Tinworth Trail

The Tinworth Trail runs roughly 90km from Sha Tau Kok southwest across Hong Kong’s New Territories and Lantau Island, ending in Tai O. Using public trails, it contains less than 4km of Hong Kong’s official Four Trails, giving runners and hikers a new challenge. It includes some iconic and spectacular trails, including Robin’s Nest, Tai To Yan, the Yuen-Tsuen Ancient Trail, Lo Fu Tau, Wong Lung Hang valley, and the Tung O Ancient Trail. The trail includes a transition from Sham Tseng in the New Territories to Sunny Bay on Lantau Island; this can be undertaken via minibus (308M) from Sham Tseng to Tsing Yi, and then MTR from Tsing Yi to Sunny Bay.

How to do the Tinworth Trail

The Tinworth Trail is unofficial, and so unlike the official Four Trails of Hong Kong, there are no physical signs or guideposts. Instead, you can download the GPX (a file with coordinates in longitude and latitude) from this website and then upload to your smart watch or phone, and then follow the trail as you go. The GPX file will work with many devices and apps; on your smartphone, we recommend Hiking Trail HK which you can download for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

The Tinworth Trail is divided into ten sections, much like each of Hong Kong’s Four Trails. Each section has start and end points that are relatively accessible from public transport, so you can run or hike for as short or long distance as you wish. The table on this page gives you the distance, elevation change, and trail condition for each section, along with a rough guide to difficulty (out of 3 stars). You’ll also find detailed information for each stage from The Trail menu above.
